13 and counting: SK girls continue DL title winning streak

Rams defeat Warriors 54-39

DELHI - The South Kortright Rams girls varsity basketball team clinched its 13th Delaware League championship title in a 54-39 win over Windham-Ashland-Jewett, at SUNY Delhi, Thursday, Feb. 16.

The Rams knew the Warriors had a well-balanced team that has been playing "really good basketball" going into the game, Rams Coach Josh Burroughs said, "They have size, speed, and shooting," Burroughs said of the Windham team's strengths.

The plan going into the game, he continued, was to make the Warriors work hard for any opportunity and limit Emma Drum's access to the ball and prevent her from being open on the three-point line.

Summarizing the game, Burroughs said Katherine Reinshagen did an exceptional job in preventing Drum from getting open and disrupted the Warriors’ offense flow.

He credits Madison Coberly for doing an outstanding job staying with Amanda Nilsen, “pestering her and not allowing her to set up their offensive plays.”

SK’s Lauren Dengler guarded both Drum and Nilsen at different times and sparked the Rams defense in the first-quarter play,  converting an and-one lay-up.

The SK win was a "hard fought one," Burroughs said.

Caitlyn Deysenroth dominated the paint and the team as a whole did a great job moving the ball.

Carlee Dropp, who finished the game with seven points and six assists, accumulated her assist numbers from feeding Deysenroth and Eckert.

Dropp “continues to do so many little things out on the floor for us,” he said. “As a freshman, her growth this season has been fun to watch. Dropp plays solid defense, rebounds the ball well and hits timely shots," Burroughs said.

SK’s “bigs” continued to be solid, Burroughs said. “Both Addy and Caitlyn provided big rebounding numbers and were a factor inside wearing down their opponents.” Eckert contributed 16 rebounds and three assists to the winning effort. “Addy handles the ball, sees the court well and was able to get Caitlyn (Deysenroth) the ball in good position.”

Leading all scorers was SK’s Deysenroth, who put up a game-high 27 points, made 14 rebounds and three blocks. Deysenroth scored all 13 of SK’s second quarter points.

“It was a hard fought first half,” Burroughs said. “With some halftime adjustments, I feel like the girls were able to move the ball with a bit more purpose in the third quarter.”

“Overall it was another total team effort.” Burroughs said. “I’m extremely pleased with their teamwork and hustle throughout the season.”

Leading the Warriors was Amanda Nilsen who scored 22 points.
